Tastes like: cashew, apricot, stout
Nivaldo dos Reis Soares is a fellow whose hand I look forward to shaking. Though we’ve not yet had the chance to meet, his coffee, his values, and his goals for the future all resonate beautifully way up here in NY and we’re quite proud to represent him from afar. We wound up with his coffee when we asked one of our favorite trading partners, Gerra Harrigan, to help us track down some coffee that tastes like milk duds, and she responded by introducing us to the Forca Cafe Coffee Quality Competition in Minas Gerais, sharing with us some of the tastiest winners that their buyer, Scott, had recently secured. When we cupped their selections, Nivaldo’s naturally processed Red Catuai lot from his farm Sitio Marmeleiro leapt off the table for its sheer sweetness, creamy body, and classy hints of stone fruit to round out the cup and keep us coming back for sips. Nivaldo operates Marmeleiro with his two children, and remarks upon their coffee with a humbling mix of pride in the quality of their work and determination to protect and nurture the environment that permits them to sustain it. With the additional premiums won through his placement in the competition, Nivaldo intends to invest in seedlings to increase his production in the years to come.
