Tastes like: orange confit, caramel, lime-ade
Hot off the container ship comes this super juicy bean from our importing friends at Sucafina. Gahahe is a washing station in Kayanza Burundi managed by Bugestal, one of Burundi’s top coffee producers. Bugestal operates several mills around the country, and they get daily deliveries of cherry from smallholder farmers, which they then process meticulously and export to our crew over at Sucafina. In Burundi most coffee is grown by smallholder farmers who happen to have trees on their property in addition to other subsistence oriented crops. Bugestal buys coffee directly from the farmers, paying them a premium bonus if their coffee sells at a higher price then anticipated. It’s a good deal for the farmers, who are guaranteed much higher prices and for Bugestal who get their hands on delicious heirloom cherries. And it’s a pretty good deal for us coffee drinkers too. We get to drink this super smooth, juicy, sweet, and nicely balanced coffee, the result of 1,740 small farmers harvest, the processing and dry milling of Bugestal, and the work of Sucafina to keep everything flowing smoothly until the coffee is in our roastery.
Process - Fully Washed
Varietal(s) - Red Bourbon
Altitude - 1800 masl
Harvest - Fall 2020
Approach - One of the more unique things about this lot is that it is 100% red bourbon cherries. Normally community lots are made up of many different varieties of coffee which can lead to wild flavors, but also sometimes make the roasting much harder and the results of each roast can be very different. With a 100% bourbon lot like this, our job as a roaster gets much easier. This bean is so tasty, we are roasting this medium light, to bring out as much sweetness and acidity as we can but to make sure they are balanced by a full, round, juicy body.
