We are super excited to offer our first coffee from our new partners in Guatemala Volcanes Coffee. Volcanes is owned by Josue Morales, one of the hardest working people we’ve come across in this very hard working industry. Josue works directly with farmers in Antigua across each step of the coffee growing and supply chain. He’s a hands on dude and it shows in the quality of coffee that he is exporting.
This lot is from the El Progresso region, specifically from San Antonio La Paz. This is a blend of many small farms from the region, and as such it is a great representation of how pleasing and great coffees from San Antiono can be. This region is also dominated by pine tries. Dominated from a tree point of view at least. Some say this gives the coffee a unique flavor profile. Whatever is going on it’s working.
This is also one of the first fresh central lots of the year! Harvested in January, it’s nice, like the first sign of spring.
Process - Washed, patio dried
Varietal(s) - Bourbon, Catuai, Sarchimor
Altitude - 1,650-1,900 masl
Harvest - Jan 2019
Approach - The goal with this coffee is to give it a real traditional medium roast. Let the coffee’s natural sugars express themselves to the fullest, and give it enough roast to be a crowd pleaser. The great thing about Guatemalan coffee is that it can appeal to everyone from your grandparents to the most discerning coffee snob. Chocolate, caramel, and fruit tones dominate, but this coffee is clean and complex enough to never get boring. Dark enough to pair really well with milk, but also light enough to shine on it’s own. I love Guatemalan coffee and it’s because of ones like these.
