Roteps Wet Mill

Mt. Hagen, Western Highlands

PNG represents such a wide variety of coffee that some years it’s almost astounding the wide range of flavors and qualities you find there.  This year is one of those years and after tasting this lot from the Roteps Wet Mill we knew we had to snag it and share it with you.

Roteps is a newer project located in the Mt. Hagen region of the Western Highlands a notorious region to say the least.  Western Highlands, like much of PNG, is bursting with coffee, yet beset with logistical and environmental challenges that make growing and exporting coffee a thankless and sometimes profit-less task.  Considering we live in a world run by Mamon, profit-less means unsustainable, and growers and producers in PNG require a certain level of ingenuity and grit to make their labor pay off.  Enter Roteps, a mill that functions as an exporter and financier for local farmers in the Mt. Hagen region.  Roteps sends daily trucks out to more than 1000 “smallholder” farms, collecting their harvests and paying them on the spot.  Roteps then mills and exports the coffee, paying their smallholder partners a premium depending on sale price.  Not a bad system honestly, as it protects the growers and helps Roteps provide us with amazing coffee.

In the cup, expect a coffee that is round and juicy, very sweet apple tones throughout.  We roasted this coffee on the lighter side, but still developed it enough to have a solid lingering aftertaste and go great either black or with milk.
