Tastes like: tropical fruit, meyer lemon, brown sugar
Lyamungo farm sits at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, the so-called “rooftop” of Africa. Clocking in at an impressive 4900 meters, Kilimanjaro dominates the surrounding landscape. It’s volcanic past leaves the area around the mountain with that awesome red volcanic soil perfect for growing coffee. Perfect for growing anything really.
Owned by Alejandro Galante, a Colombian gentleman from Antioquia, Lyamungo grows mostly shade grown Arabica. Traditionally Kenyan varietals dominate, and the lot we bought recently is a mix of N39, SL27, Bourbon, and Kent, giving this coffee avery traditionally “Kenyan” flavor profile. Lyamungo is a farm under the umbrella of APK (Africa Plantations Kilimanjaro) who handle the milling and exporting duties for several small farms in the region. About 95% of what APK produces these days are fully-washed, sun-dried coffees, but of
course since it’s 2019 they are starting to experiment with other methods of processing; full naturals and honey processing. Boy am I glad they stuck with washed on this one. One of the things we love about this coffee is the structure and clarity of flavor, a testament to impeccable washed processing.
